In this class I will teach you my process for painting loose abstract flowers.  I start off the class talking about composition and colors.  Then I walk you through my painting process step by step.  I show you how I begin by sketching my compostion onto my canvas and how I layer my colors to create a loose and varied look.  

Painting loose can be tough. Here are my best tips for success when painting loose and abstract!
1.  Paint with your non-dominant hand.
2.  Hold the paint brush at the very top.
3.  Don't ever try to paint within the lines!

Titanium white
Prussian blue
Light olive green
Cadmium medium yellow
Light blue permanent

Five Tips for Painting with Acrylics on Canvas for New Artists

Here are five tips for artists who are learning how to paint with acrylics on canvas.

 1. Colors - Take your time to choose a color palette that you know will work.  Get some paint card samples from your local hardware store, or even better, make your own with the paints you have.  Choose several colors that you think will work well for your painting and start with those. Referencing the color wheel when you get stuck will be helpful, as well.

2. Brushes - Test a few different brushes to see which ones you like. I typically use filbert, round, and flat brushes in a variety of sizes.  You need to figure out which ones work best for you.  

3. Underpainting - Paint your canvas one or more colors BEFORE you start your painting.  Adding this first layer will help to add depth to your painting. I like to let small pops of my underpainting peek through.  A lot of artists start with a red or pink underpainting.  

4. Layers - Paint in layers and wait for each layer to dry before adding more paint.  It can be annoying to have to wait but you will have a better end result. If you try to layer your paint while it’s still wet you won’t be able to achieve the colors you desire.

5. Practice - If you’re new to painting you might get frustrated. Don’t worry, it takes practice. If you really enjoy painting then just enjoy the process and eventually the results will follow.  There are lots of free painting tutorials online that you can watch to pick up new tips and tricks along the way.

The One Thing That Will Improve Your Acrylic Painting Skills

The one thing that will improve your acrylic painting skills is daily practice. It doesn’t have to be an hour or more. If you can only paint for 15 minutes, do it. Your skills will improve dramatically if you are consistent with your practice. I truly believe that painting 15 - 30 minutes per day is better than painting 2 hours on one day during the week.

I’ve been painting for years and I have seen the results myself. When I take too much time off from painting, it takes several days for my skills to come back to me.

Best Tips and Techniques for Painting Abstract Flowers with Acrylic Paint on Canvas

Here are some of my best tips and techniques for painting flowers with acrylic paint on canvas!

If you have any questions, please leave a comment so we can disucss!

1. Use several different brushes and brush sizes. Different size brush strokes will add interest to your flowers. If you only have a larger brush, turn it sideways and use the thin side, too!

2. Build up layers in your painting. Letting each layer dry before adding more paint on top will help you to create depth.

3. Add texture to your painting by using different tools. You can add some thick paint using a palette knife and you can also use the palette knife to scrape some texture into your wet paint.

4. Make sure you have a lot of contrast in your colors. Use a variety of light, medium, and darker paint colors. For example, if I have a lot of pink flowers I tend to use a very dark blue or gray as my background color to add contrast.

5. Don’t paint perfect circles! Most flowers are not perfect circles so don’t paint them that way - especially if you are going for an abstract flower look. I like my flowers to be asymetrical and I try to use a variety of brush strokes to avoid making circles.

6. Overlap your flowers and leaves. Your painting will look much better if some of your flowers and leaves are overlapping. One mistake I made when I first started painting flowers was I made all of my flowers evenly spaced. I think my paintings look much better when my flowers and leaves are touching each other and even when a few things overlap.

7. Vary the size of your flowers and leaves. Make some small and some larger to create a more interesting and varied look.
