Best Tips and Techniques for Painting Abstract Flowers with Acrylic Paint on Canvas

Here are some of my best tips and techniques for painting flowers with acrylic paint on canvas!

1. Use several different brushes and brush sizes. Different size brush strokes will add interest to your flowers. If you only have a larger brush, turn it sideways and use the thin side, too!

2. Build up layers in your painting. Letting each layer dry before adding more paint on top will help you to create depth.

3. Add texture to your painting by using different tools. You can add some thick paint using a palette knife and you can also use the palette knife to scrape some texture into your wet paint.

4. Make sure you have a lot of contrast in your colors. Use a variety of light, medium, and darker paint colors. For example, if I have a lot of pink flowers I tend to use a very dark blue or gray as my background color to add contrast.

5. Don’t paint perfect circles! Most flowers are not perfect circles so don’t paint them that way - especially if you are going for an abstract flower look. I like my flowers to be asymetrical and I try to use a variety of brush strokes to avoid making circles.

6. Overlap your flowers and leaves. Your painting will look much better if some of your flowers and leaves are overlapping. One mistake I made when I first started painting flowers was I made all of my flowers evenly spaced. I think my paintings look much better when my flowers and leaves are touching each other and even when a few things overlap.

7. Vary the size of your flowers and leaves. Make some small and some larger to create a more interesting and varied look.

The Best Acrylic Paints For Beginners

What are the best acrylic paints for beginners? The ones you can afford or the ones you have in front of you! When you are just starting out, the paint you use is not important at all.  It’s not the quality of your paint or brushes that matters. What matters is practice. Painting and practicing all the time is what matters. You won’t make a better painting because you bought the fancy paint but you will make better paintings when you paint on a regular basis.

Also, I find that I put less pressure on myself when I buy less expensive canvases and paint because if I mess them up then I didn’t waste a ton of money.  I regularly buy Liquitex Basics acrylic paint (they didn’t pay me to say this!). I like the quality and I buy them when they are 2 for 1 at my local art store.

Practice, not paint, will make you a better artist! Keep painting!

A little about my process

Here’s a tiny peek at my painting process. When I first started painting I did not work from a sketch book or photo. Now I work from either an image or a fresh floral arrangement. I start with a quick sketch then figure out a color palette. The second photo is how I start most of my paintings - with lots of colorful layers. Sometimes I mark the canvas with chalk when I’m trying to be careful and other times I just have at it with reckless abandon. The chalk will wipe away easily with a paper towel and a spritz of water.
